"Gaslighting is an attempt to manipulate ones experience in an effort to distort their reality. Gaslighting is psychological manipulation. Whether it's intentional or not. It typically happens in situations where there is a power dynamic. Imagine telling a rape survivor, "You should've worn something less revealing." Or asking a woman who has survived domestic violence, "What did you do for him to hit you?" Gaslighting not only happens in intimate relationships but in all types of relationships & social circles.
Anytime these statements are used to discount, minimize or dismiss black & brown experiences, it is gaslighting."
